Vanavil Trust was started in 2005 in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami of 2004 to support children of two Nomadic communities, Boom Boom Mattukarars and Narikuravars, in Tamil Nadu. After 19 years of working with the communities, Vanavil now has grown into an organisation with multiple projects that are aimed to support the education of the children from the nomadic tribal communities.
In our Childrens Home
We rehabilitate girl children from begging, child marriage and other harmful practices. We also house girl children handed over to us by government’s social welfare department.
● We provide them shelter, nutritious food and education. We engage them in sports and extracurricular activities.
● We house 50 girl children who are not supported by family and who are in need of care and
protection at our children’s home.
● We have a kitchen for the home and provide nutritious and tasty meals to our children, three times a day, along with a healthy snack in the evening.
● Children at Vanavil Home, study at our Vanavil Nursery and Primary school within the same campus. After grade 5, girls are admitted in Government High School, in the nearby village, Avarani Puducherry.
● We provide them transportation to the School, uniforms, books and stationaries, and other incidental expenses.
● We conduct online English & Math classes, evening classes and special weekend mathematics class for 9th and 10th class students.
● Regular arts and theatre camps are held with eminent artists. These camp nurture and improve their emotional wellbeing and have produced tangible changes in the student’s behaviour and attitude.
● Drama productions are a part of Vanavil. Every year we do a drama production and perform it in various arts and theatre events.
● Besides arts, we encourage the students to engage in sports. Every day the children have their playtime (games).
● The children live close to nature in our Farm campus and also raise a vegetable garden every year in the post monsoon season.
● Addition to that, we do advocacy work. The parents are not aware of the government schemes available for their children in education and jobs. Most of them didn’t even get birth certificates for their children. We guide them in getting government documents and to avail the schemes
